14TH OCTOBER 2021

Hello!

It’s Mark, our first month has flown by so I wanted to get in touch & share a few updates but before I go any further, I want to thank every filmmaker who’s been a part of our launch, I’ve really enjoyed watching your films & preparing our interviews - a few have honestly inspired me, & it’s just nice to connect with like-minded creatives, I get a kick out of seeing my favourite filmmakers like Deren, Lynch & Ozu mentioned in interviews.

FILM CATALOGUE - NEW COLLECTION ‘BOURGEON’:

  • I'm creating a new collection called ‘Bourgeon’ that will focus on filmmakers who are learning their craft, but have nonetheless displayed ambitious, interesting & unique qualities within their first &/or second films.

  • I think recognizing & discussing the positive aspects of their films is important as it will encourage these filmmakers to continue following & honing many of their instincts. And I know we have a lot of room for improvement, but I hope we can set a nice example & standard of film discussion & promotion.

  • Please note the underlying principles that characterize the rest of the films in our catalogue will apply to movies in this collection - we will always prioritize & value films with distinct technique, vision & mood.

FILM RELEASE SCHEDULE - INSTAGRAM PROMOTION:

  • I've liked my approach to promoting & releasing films so far, I think releasing two films per week has worked well for the most part. But like I said, I've been inspired by a few filmmakers like Neta & Thilo, it didn't feel right moving past their interviews shortly after promoting & releasing their films on our platform. I know filmmakers like Neta & Thilo put in so much time, effort & truth into answering my questions, so I want to honour & prolong the promotion of their films & interviews.

  • Going forward, I will trial the idea of splitting certain interviews into two parts & subsequently two Instagram posts. I know the majority of our interviews are pretty long so I hope this increases their readability. When this occurs, it will usually mean I will only promote one film during the week.

SITE DESIGN - FILM CATALOGUE:

  • I’ve already started to sort films by genre. I think listing films by completion year or the date of their publication on our site can create a bit of recency bias in their presentation, so I want to categorize films according to their genre(s) in fairly simple & minimal ways. I’ll be sticking with main & traditional genres, not really going to bother with sub-genres.

  • And more on presentation, I’m not going to create a top-down approach as I don’t really like the idea of films slipping down the site & essentially becoming invisible after a short period of time, I don’t want people to have to scroll all the way down to find certain films after a few months. I’m going to simply reorder/reposition films every 3 months so films at the bottom can move higher & therefore have better visibility - by doing this, everyone’s film will eventually spend a bit of time at the bottom & top of the site.

Lastly, I won’t be adding new films to our catalogue this week & next - I’m working on a few aspects of the new collection & focusing on site design & maintenance.

Thanks for reading, & we’ll be in touch soon!
